Background on establishment of APAPARI
In 1995, Prof. Chen, Prof. Vichyanond and Prof. Lee discussed the necessities of gathering for Asian Pediatric Allergists and decided to form an association at the 2nd APCACI in Taiwan.
In 1997, they got together to prepare the establishment of the association on April 12 at KAPARD in Seoul, Korea. After two additional meetings in Seoul, it was agreed to name the association “Asia Pacific Association of Pediatric Allergy, Respirology and Immunology”, APAPARI in short.
In 1998, the meeting for the foundation of APAPARI was held on May 13 at Allergy Asthma Meeting 1998 in Bangkok, Thailand. In this meeting, the name of association and steering committee were established and Prof. Pakit Vichyanond was elected as the 1st president of APAPARI. Initial membership included physicians and scientists from 10 countries in Asia-Pacific region.
In 2017, during the 2017 APAPARI meeting in Beijing, the word “Association” was replaced by “Academy” under the presidency of Prof. Gary Wong. This change was aimed to increase the level of the academic activities (i.e. academy) among members and also provide opportunities to cultivate future academic leaders in the field.
